Here are some winter tips for styling and caring for both human hair wigs and synthetic hair wigs from our Simply Wigs NZ range:
Human Hair Wigs
1. Washing and Conditioning:
- Frequency: Wash your wig every 1 - 2 weeks of wearing, or as needed especially if worn daily or using styling products. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to maintain moisture and shine.
- Method: Detangle the wig with a wide-tooth comb before washing. Wet the wig with lukewarm water, apply a small amount of shampoo, and work it through the hair gently. Rinse and condition, then rinse again until the water runs clear.
- Drying: Allow the wig to air dry on a wig stand. Use a blow dryer on a low heat setting to style as desired. Avoid high heat to prevent damage.
2. Styling:
- Tools: Use heat styling tools on low settings. Apply a heat protectant to minimise damage. For daily maintenance, use a wig brush or wide-tooth comb designed for wigs.
- Products: Lightly use and avoid applying them to the roots to prevent shedding.
3. Winter Care:
- Hydration: Winter air can be drying. Consider a deep conditioning treatment every other wash to keep the hair soft and manageable. Blend Argan Smooth Conditioner with Argan Treatment mist for a deep conditioning treatment that's instantly absorbed into your hair, producing an incredible shine while adding elasticity and suppleness to dry, winter-stricken ends
- Deep Nourishment: Try a Pure Repair Application. See this video
- Storage: Store the wig on a stand in a cool, dry place to maintain its shape and style.
Synthetic Hair Wigs
1. Washing and Conditioning:
- Frequency: Wash synthetic wigs every 2 weeks or so, more frequently if worn daily. Use shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for synthetic hair.
- Method: Use cool water and avoid hot water which can damage the fibres.
Hold wig under cool running water/ use a shower spray. Gently lather the hair with a capful of wig shampoo making sure the hair is travelling in the same direction using downward motion to prevent tangling. Leave with shampoo for 1-2 minutes
Thoroughly rinse out the shampoo under cool running water.
Gently press out the excess water, then roll the hair in a towel and dab softly. Avoid rubbing or wringing. Gently shake and apply a leave-in conditioning spray approximately 30cm away, ensuring a light and even coverage, concentrating on the hair that extends from the edge of the cap both inside and out.
- Drying: Air dry on a wig stand. Do not use heat to dry or style synthetic wigs.
2. Styling:
- Tools: Use fingers or a wide tooth comb. Avoid heat styling tools unless the wig is specifically labeled as heat-friendly. For heat-friendly wigs, use a heat protectant and keep the heat setting low.
- Products: Use styling sprays and leave-in conditioners formulated for synthetic wigs to help maintain the style and prevent frizz and tangling.
3. Winter Care:
- Static and Frizz: Combat static by lightly misting the wig with water or using a Detangler or Revitalising leave-in conditioning spray designed for synthetic fibre.
-Detangling: Detangle after every wear with a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush to prevent knots and tangles. Watch this video for daily care of mid to long synthetic styles
- Steaming: Use a steamer to help smooth "friction frizz” and rejuvenate your favourite synthetic winter style. NOTE: Steaming will permanently change the shape of the fibre. Hold steam 2-3” away from your hairpiece to avoid damage and lightly steam through the strands. All fibre must cool/dry completely to hold the desired shape. Learn more by watching this video
